About the Department

The Department of Natural Sciences (NS) was established in 2018 under the College of Science and Technical Education (CoSTE) of the Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Academic programmes

Currently, the Department of Natural Sciences offers Bachelor of Science with Education in Biological, Physical and Mathematical sciences.

Bachelor of Science with Education

This three-year programme is designed to train and produce sufficient and quality graduate teachers with knowledge and skills of subject matter, competence in two teaching subjects as well as in pedagogical skills.

Entry qualifications/requirement

The entry requirements for the candidates applying for Bachelor of Science with Education should possess the Advanced certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) within at least two (2) principal passes with D grade with a minimum of 4.0 points Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

 

Or

 

Diploma in Education with Science subjects with Credit or B average OR Holders of Ordinary Diploma (NTA level 6) in education or other diploma in Sciences with an average of B or GPA not less than 3.0

Skills

After successfully completion of the program, our graduates will be able to;

  • Practice routine principles of enquiry and /or research in physics.
  • Effectively communicate information, ideas, programs and solutions to peers, faculty and non-specialist’s audiences
  • Practice routine principles of enquiry and /or research in chemistry.
  • Effectively communicate information, ideas, programs and solutions to peers, faculty and non-specialist audiences.
  • To practice routine principles of enquiry and /or research in Biology.
  • Effectively communicate information, ideas, programs and solutions to peers, faculty and non-specialist audiences.
  • Solve mathematical problems in logical and systematic manner
  • Reason, construct, and evaluate mathematical arguments and develop an appreciation for mathematical rigor and inquiry.
  • Effectively communicate their mathematical thinking orally and in writing to peers, faculty and others
  • Plan and prepare lessons for science subjects.
  • Teach effectively science subjects.
  • Evaluate lessons outcomes and the students’ performance.

 Career/employment opportunities

Graduates from this program will be able to work in the following fields;

  • Self-employed individuals through entrepreneurship skills related to application of Physics, Mathematica, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Academic institutions such as secondary schools, colleges and universities.
  • Any other research and industrial laboratories that use electrical equipment.
