MUST and Mufindi District Council agree to implement a strategic project through the signed MoU under CFIT Project

A step towards the implementation of the Memorandum of Understating that was signed in December 2023 through the China Funds-in-Trust (CFIT) Project Phase III, MUST and Mufindi District Council agreed to implement a mini-hydropower plant project across the Nyalawa River in Rufiji Basin. In his opening remarks, the MUST Vice Chancelor, Prof. Aloys Mvuma appreciated the decision by the Mufindi District Council to select MUST as a suitable institution to work on this project. “With the fact the University is unique, all necessary disciplines that support this type of project are available at MUST and the project can be executed through its experienced consultancy company for the benefit the District Council and the nation as a whole,” said Prof. Mvuma. 

On the other hand, the Mufundi District Council Chairperson, Hon. Festo Mgina said that the Council is determined to ensure the project is successfully implemented. “Upon the successful completion and its operationalization, the Council will increase its revenue collection, create employment and also conserve the environment,” emphasised Hon. Mgina. The Mufindi District Executive Director Mr. Mashaka Mfaume thanked the MUST Management for accepting the task of working with the Council to oversee the development of this mini-hydropower plant project. “All relevant information will be available at your disposal,” said Mr. Mfaume.

The MUST Project Coordinator of the CIFT Project, Prof. Zacharia Katambara informed the meeting that this project will provide an opportunity for field practical training for students, internship for graduates and junior staff from the fields of civil, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, electronics and ICT. “The implementation of this project benefits leaner with real-world experience that enriches their skills and competences while reducing the skills gap that exists in the labour industry,” said Prof. Katambara. In the end, the two institutions agreed on suitable project implementation approach that observes all legal issues. 

At a sightseeing event, the Council leaders made a tour around the campus and witnessed the progress of the flagship HEET project implementation. In this project MUST is constructing one complex academic block, Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer block and academic workshops and laboratories. The leaders appreciated and congratulated the efforts being done by the MUST Management and the 6th Government lead by Her Excellence, Hon Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania to improve and increase access to higher education in the country.
