Department of Mathematics & Statistics

Welcome to the webpage for the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST)!  The Department of Mathematics & Statistics came into existence following the approval of MUST Reformation by the University Council Meetings of 18th and 19th held on July 16 and August 26 of 2019 respectively.

Our vision is to become one of the world center of excellence in mathematical sciences and therefore enhancing MUST vision “Endeavoring to lead in Science and Technology” Strategically, we are committed to provide our students with the insights and tools to become leaders in mathematical sciences, and to capitalize strength in research to both students and instructors.

About Mathematics:   Mathematics embraces the spirit of the liberal arts: mathematics is an art, a pure science, a language and an analytical tool for both natural and social sciences, a means of exploring philosophical questions, and a beautiful edifice that is a gift to human creativity.

In this regard, the Department of Mathematics & Statistics is developing a comprehensive set of curricula for students; among other includes bachelor’s degree programs with concentrations in applied mathematics, pure mathematics, computation mathematics, mathematics education, and Statistics. Specific programs under consideration include Bachelor of Science in statistics, Bachelor of Science in actuarial mathematics, Bachelor of Science with Education (mathematics & ICT) and Bachelor of Mathematic & Economics with Education. Two graduate level programs, Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and Master of Science in Statistics are underway to start at any time, to the least we do expect to start MSc. Degrees earlier than any other programs under consideration.

We are expecting to start a Bachelor of Science in Statistics for the academic year 2023 – 2023. The Department has in progress also pushing for programs in diploma and certificate in applied statistics. Moreover, the Department is in progress developing a curriculum of PhD in applied mathematics.

The research interests of the Department embody core areas of analysis, computational mathematics, geometry and topology, mathematical biology, functional analysis, nonlinear systems, and statistics.
