About the Department

The Department of Department of Medical Sciences and Technology (MT) was established in 2018 under the College of Science and Technical Education (CoSTE), Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Academic programmes

Currently, the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology offers one diploma programme in Biomdical Equipment Engineering.

Diploma in Biomedical Equipment Engineering

A three years programme that is designed to train and produce competent biomedical equipment engineers who are ready for the place of work and societal needs. At the completion of the programme, graduates are expected to meet the stiff competition in medical, research and education laboratories.

Entry qualifications/requirement

Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with at least four (4) passes D and above in Biology, Physics/Engineering Science, and Chemistry and Mathematics. 

Skills

After completion of the program, students will be able to;

  • Carryout installations and technical maintenance of biomedical system and equipment.
  • Apply electrical, electronic, optical and physiological principles to diagnose, trace, locate and repair biomedical equipment and support systems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with computer programs and database specific to bio-medical engineering and general use.
  • Design and develop biomedical systems and equipment.
  • Engage in troubleshooting and repair of biomedical systems and equipment installations to ensure satisfactory performance and compliance with specifications and regulations.
  • Establish and manage business related to biomedical equipment design, repair and maintenance.

  • Self-employed individuals through entrepreneurship skills related to application of biomedical equipment and electrical engineering.
  • Medical institutions such public and private hospitals.
  • Academic institutions such as secondary schools, colleges and universities.
