Department of Crop Science and Horticulture

Department of Crop Science and Horticulture (CHS) is one of the departments in College of Agricultural sciences and Technology (CoAST) which officially launched in December 2022. The CSH is committed to provide students and other stakeholders with an excellent knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in agriculture-related programs and conducts research and consultancy in various agricultural fields. The research activities conducted at CSH focus on developing new technologies and practices that improve crop production, postharvest management, and agricultural sustainability. 

CSH is expected to offer several Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programs, including BSc. Crop Science and Technology, BSc. Agronomy and Technology, BSc. Postharvest Technology and BSc. Horticultural Science and Technology. These degree programs will offer students with comprehensive knowledge, practical skills, and hands on experience on crop production, horticulture, post-harvest management, and agronomy. But also, CSH will expose students to latest technologies used in agriculture, including precision agriculture, digital farming, and biotechnology.

All programs to be offered at CSH are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding and gain hands-on experience on principles and practices of crop production and management. Programs will include courses (but not limited to) on soil science, plant physiology, plant breeding and genetics, soil fertility, soil and water conservation, crop physiology, crop management, integrated pest management, weed management, and plant protection. Students will be given opportunity to specialize in areas such as plant biotechnology, precision agriculture, and sustainable agriculture. 

The Horticultural Science and Technology program to be offered will focus on the cultivation and management of fruits, vegetables, spices, and ornamental plants. Student will be exposed to courses related to plant propagation, plant nutrition, plant breeding and genetics, landscape design, and pest management.

The department also provides short courses in different agricultural fields, allowing students and professionals to gain knowledge and skills in specialized areas.

Currently department have established Demo farm (Knowledge Centre) which will provide training to farmers, students and other stakeholders on good practices and technologies which are aimed to increase agricultural productivity and increase
